Designing a wireless communications solution is a complex process requiring a high degree of technical skills, expertise and experience. A solution can involve many different technologies that must be integrated together and implemented so that they operate reliably and seamlessly. The goal must be to provide a solution that meets or exceeds the financial, business and operational needs of the customer and can be supported for the entire life cycle of the project.
By getting the design stage correct we can ensure that the return on investment is maximized and the solution benefits are delivered into the future.
ACMA, the Federal Government authority for radio communications, has mandated that 400 MHz band radio channel licences be narrow banded by 31st December 2012 in high-density areas and 2015 for medium and low-density areas. Narrow banding is the process of changing licence conditions and the physical operating bandwidth of radio equipment from 25 KHz channels to 12.5 KHz channels.
A well-designed and professionally installed communications solution is an asset to any business or enterprise. As well as providing improved efficiency and levels of customer service, they also meet a valuable need in ensuring the safety and security of your human and physical resources.
Like any asset, regular and correct maintenance is essential to keep things operating at their optimum level and preventing major outages in the future. In the event that something does go wrong, the correct backing and support will restore operations with minimal down time or disruption to customers and staff.
AA Radio can provide standard and tailored technical support options to meet needs ranging from repairs to full system maintenance and 24/7/365 in the field.

Digital Systems
In the European summer of 1895, Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi successfully managed to transmit a telegraphic message over a distance of 2.4 kilometres. And so, the man who history refers to as “the father of long distance radio transmission” gave to the world a platform of unimaginable possibilities. From these humble beginnings, radio has evolved and branched out into multiple areas that have touched all our lives. From Wireless LAN’s through to Paging Receivers, Mobile Telephones through to Trunked Radios and the many seemingly endless variations in between.
Analogue Systems
Analogue has been the mainstay of radio communications technology for over seventy years. Whilst electronic hardware has progressed from vacuum tubes through to sophisticated miniaturized microelectronics, the fundamental platform of analogue modulation and channel access schemes has underpinned the rich functionality that society has enjoyed from this medium. All aspects of society including industry, Government, Public Safety, individuals and communities have greatly benefitted from the progression and evolution of analogue two-way radio.
VoIP & RoIP
Voice over IP (VoIP) and Radio over IP (RoIP) are technologies that have become dominant building blocks in communications systems. Analogue voice is converted into IP data packets and then sent over bearer such as the Internet, LAN/WAN, WiFi, Microwave, Radio and so forth. These packets are then re-constituted at the receiving end and converted back to the original analogue signal.
This offers tremendous benefits and flexibility when designing a solution in the areas of:
- Voice and data quality
- Security with encryption
- Flexibility of routing to multiple areas, sites or cities
- System architecture
- Voice recording and storage
- Integration into telephone, PABX, trunked radio and conventional radio systems
AA Radio has extensive experience in providing IP solutions for many customers such as Life Saving Victoria, Port of Melbourne Corporation and Western Health. With our strong and long-established relationships with the key suppliers; we have the expertise to design, install and support a best in class solution.
PTToC
PTToC or Press to Talk Over Cellular is an exciting new technology that offers some of the functionality of a two-way radio incorporated into a mobile device such as a phone, tablet or purpose-built rugged industrial unit. The technology uses the mobile telephone network to provide wide-area coverage across regions, state-wide or national.
As with any technology however, there are some limitations and careful analysis of youf communications needs must be undertaken to ensure the right outcome for your business, staff and customers.
IP & Wireless Networks
The Network is a key part of any voice and data solution. It can range from a single WiFi access point or radio base station, through to a multi-site system with hundreds of nodes spread across multiple sites. When the network either fails or under-performs, users become frustrated, productivity is lost and customer satisfaction invariably is affected.
Designing such a network requires detailed consideration to ensure that the network provides the necessary performance to internal users and end-customers.
This offers tremendous benefits and flexibility when designing a solution in the areas of:
- How many users does the network need to support?
- What is their typical usage profile in terms of data volumes, frequency of access?
- What physical areas and sites does the network need to cover?
- What data throughput and response times are required during the busy period?
- What are the security requirements?
- What are the redundancy and failover requirements?
- What are the support requirements during business and after hours?
- What regime of Network Monitoring and Quality Assurance will be used?
- What type of network access devices will be issued to users and how are these to be supported?
- What type of future demand is predicted and how will the network be expanded to meet this?
AA Radio has extensive experience in working through these issues with our customers to ensure a network is designed that will meet or exceed the requirements. We can provide optional tailored technical support, maintenance and monitoring to ensure it delivers consistent performance through its entire life cycle.
Many users of analogue two-way radio are now entering a phase where their systems need modernising. This can be due to a number of factors such as:
- Spectrum licensing changes such as ACMA Narrow banding legislation
- Current functionality no longer meets business operations or staff requirements
- Age of existing equipment means support is no longer economical
- Spare parts and repair tools or jigs are no longer available
Delivering a successful solution to customers or user groups requires a set of disciplines and skills to achieve the technical and business objectives stated. After investing in a mobile communications technology solution to deliver operational, safety and business benefits to an enterprise, the final step is to ensure the equipment is installed correctly. Equipment should be installed professionally and in full compliance with manufacturer specifications. This ensures that the system operates at its optimum, does not compromise user safety or falls foul of regulatory agencies and continues to deliver the return on investment for entire life cycle of the project.
Whether the equipment is single Automatic Vehicle Location telemetry unit into courier van, or a complex mix of multiple two-way radios into a fire fighting vehicle with remote reporting and control, the principles of planning and executing remain the same.
AA Radio has successfully delivered some of the largest fleet installations in Australia into vehicle and fixed assets for customers such as Country Fire Authority, D.E.L.W.P (D.E.P.I.), Port of Melbourne Corporation and Hancock Plantations plus many other Industrial and Government customer. These total tens of thousands of units and due to the critical nature that communications plays in their operations, demand the highest levels of quality and reliability while minimizing vehicle “down time” during the installation program.
Radio systems with multiple nodes and other communication nodes such as PABX, dispatch centres and integrated applications require connectivity. In many systems designed today, IP is used as the standard interface allowing a variety of bearer mediums to be employed.
For non-mission/safety critical systems, a public carrier based bearer such as a dedicated IP link or a mobile phone based (e.g. GPRS) bearer can be used.

They are an effective tool that will reduce costs, increase revenues through improved productivity, efficiency and customer service & aid compliance with OH&S.
The heart of any radio communications system is the site of where the main repeater or base station will transmit its signals from. The higher the antenna is above the ground, the further the signal propagates which is why many radio sites are located on top of elevations such as mountains and tall buildings.
In situations where this is not practicable, the answer is to erect a tower and mount the antenna system to it.
Such a project may sound simple, however the execution for a successful outcome requires a combination of specialized technical skills, construction skills, project management and experience. Things to be considered include:
